Eligibility Criteria
Emergency physicians seeking initial certification in NCC must:
- Be certified by ABEM
- Successfully complete the pre-approved training or practice as specified in the eligibility criteria
- Complete and submit the application to ABEM (request an application)
- Actively participate in ABEM’s continuing certification process
- Fulfill the ABEM Policy on Medical Licensure
- Comply with the ABEM Policy on Board Eligibility for Subspecialty Certification

Certification Process
Apply
Physicians must sign into their ABEM Portal and select the green Neurocritical Care link. Application and examination fees are due at the time of submission. Application fees are non-refundable; however, approved applications are valid for seven years.
Scheduling
Once your application is submitted and reviewed, ABEM will forward your examination authorization to ABPN. The ABPN will contact you with instructions on scheduling your exam appointment in early August.
Results & Scoring
Information about exam scoring is available on the ABPN website.
ABEM notifies physicians in writing that examination results are available through their ABEM Portal within 90 days of the last day of exam.
