Subspecialties Transitioning to Alternative Assessments

ABEM currently administers subspecialty certification examinations in EMS and Medical Toxicology. Continuing certification requirements for these two subspecialties are transitioning to module-based assessments and a 5-year certification cycle.

What about continuing certification requirements for other subspecialties available to ABEM-certified physicians? Other certifying boards have developed alternative assessments as well. The ABEM Board of Directors encourages physicians who have the option to participate in an alternative assessment to recertify using these new assessments as they encourage staying up to date in the subspecialty.

If you have a question about subspecialty assessments to recertify, please contact ABEM at subspecialties@abem.org, or 517-337-4500, option 4.
