The ABEM Board of Directors approved a new verification form that program directors will be required to complete for each graduating resident. Beginning in 2024, in addition to the questions listed on the traditional verification form, the updated online form will require the program director to attest to the successful completion of detailed individual competencies (e.g., can manage a difficult airway in all ages).
In 2025, the form is being used formatively. Responding negatively about a resident’s individual competencies will not affect that resident’s eligibility to apply for initial certification. The ABEM Board of Directors is thankful for the feedback provided by programs to the new verification form.
In 2026, the form and attestations that go into effect will count toward board eligibility and the ability of the graduating resident to take the ABEM Qualifying Exam. Residents who do not meet all competencies will need to return to ACGME training.
