Opportunity for Early-Career Physicians: ABEM Emergency Medicine Fellowship with the National Academy of Medicine 

National Academy of Medicine Now Accepting Applications 

The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is proud to sponsor the National Academy of Medicine ABEM Emergency Medicine Fellowship. The purpose of the Fellowship is to provide talented, early-career health science scholars in Emergency Medicine with the opportunity to experience and participate in evidence-based health care or public health studies that improve the care and access to care of patients in domestic and global health care systems. ABEM-certified physicians or active candidates for certification by ABEM, who hold non-tenured faculty positions in any university, are eligible for the program. 

Key information:  

  • This experience will introduce the ABEM Emergency Medicine Fellow to a variety of experts and perspectives, including legislators, government officials, industry leaders, executives of voluntary health organizations, scientists, and other health professionals.  
  • Each fellow will be assigned to an NAM member who will serve as a senior mentor during the two years of the fellowship. 
  • The fellowship requires a 10- to 20-percent commitment of time for two years.  
  • A flexible research grant of $25,000 will be awarded to each ABEM Emergency Medicine Fellow.

Complete application materials in electronic format are due to ABEM no later than May 19, 2025. This allows ABEM to generate the nomination letter that is required to go with the materials.  

Applicants for the ABEM Emergency Medicine Fellowship must: 

  • Be nominated by a member of the National Academy of Medicine or a board member of ABEM 
  • Be an ABEM-certified physician or meet the Emergency Medicine requirements for board certification 
  • Hold an M.D. or D.O. 
  • Be two-to-ten years out from completion of post-graduate work 
  • Be able to dedicate 10- to 20-percent of time to the fellowship for two years 
  • Hold U.S. citizen or permanent resident status at the time of the application
