The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) Board of Directors is excited to announce that the Resuscitation module will be one of the modules that will count toward ABEM continuing certification requirements. The primary goal of this module is to improve the physician’s knowledge of resuscitation regardless of the patient’s age or reason for presentation to the emergency department.
“We understand the value and necessity for ABEM-certified physicians to be current and maintain knowledge in Resuscitation. MyEMCert modules were developed to promote lifelong learning rather than one high-stakes exam every ten years. Medical advances occur more frequently than every ten years, and our recertification process allows us the flexibility to bring forward topics that assist physicians in staying up to date,” shared Diane L. Gorgas, M.D., ABEM President.
The Resuscitation module was initially made available in 2023 as an optional activity for physicians to improve knowledge and skills in resuscitation as well as to potentially meet local medical staff requirements to be proficient in the care of critically ill or injured patients. Starting on June 24, 2025, physicians can take the Resuscitation module and have it count toward their MyEMCert requirements for continuing certification in Emergency Medicine. The Nontraumatic Musculoskeletal module will no longer be available.
Nontraumatic Musculoskeletal Module Will Retire
One outcome from this change is that ABEM will be retiring the Nontraumatic Musculoskeletal MyEMCert module topic. Physicians who have already completed this module will not be affected, and it will count for current requirements, if indicated.
How Does This Affect Emergency Physicians with MyEMCert Requirements?
- After June 24, you will see Resuscitation available as one of your MyEMCert module options when registering for modules.
- If you have registered for but have not completed the Nontraumatic Musculoskeletal module and wish to do so, you will need to complete the module by May 31, 2025.
- If you have not registered nor taken the Resuscitation module yet, there is nothing for you to do. After June 24, 2025, when you are completing ABEM requirements, you will see Resuscitation as one of your module options to complete for your continuing certification through MyEMCert.
- If you registered for and completed the Resuscitation module within your current certification cycle, ABEM will send you an email in early June 2025 to outline your next steps and options for using the module to meet your ABEM requirements.
