Important EMS Certification Updates from ABEM

MyEMSCert is Launching in 2023!

EMS continuing certification will be moving to a module-based process similar to Emergency Medicine’s MyEMCert. The process will be shifting from a high-stakes exam administered in a testing center to modules that physicians can take from home. The switch to MyEMSCert will emphasize relevant content, save physicians time, and better accommodate their busy schedules.

MyEMSCert is a new way for EMS-certified physicians to stay certified.

Core elements of MyEMSCert include:

✔ Topic-specific modules that incorporate relevant subjects in EMS

Open-book modules that can be completed anywhere, anytime

Immediate feedback pass/fail results, correct answers, and rationales

Content  that keeps you informed about Knowledge Advancements in the specialty

5-Year Certification and Annual Fee

Like EM, EMS will also move to a five-year certification cycle and annual fee. Rather than having to pay individually for modules and certification activities, physicians will pay an annual fee, which spreads payments evenly over the certification cycle rather than larger point-in-time payments for requirements.

Physicians can pay the annual fee for all 5 years of certification in one lump sum during the first year of their 5-year certification or make annual payments. The fee can be paid at any time during the year. However, the fee must be paid in order to access continuing certification activities.

How Does This Affect EMS-Certified Physicians?

Physicians will be able to use MyEMSCert to maintain EMS subspecialty certification beginning in 2023. Starting in 2023, EMS physicians who renew their certification will transition from a ten-year certification cycle to a five-year cycle with an annual fee.

When fully phased in, MyEMSCert requirements will be:
EMS Reqs

Note: ABEM requires physicians to comply with the ABEM Policy on Medical Licensure and agree to ABEM’s Code of Professionalism

Transition

During the transition to MyEMSCert, there may not be 4 MyEMSCert modules available. Physicians whose EMS certification expires in 2023 will have options available to fulfill their EMS continuing certification requirements depending on what is available to them. Two MyEMSCert modules will be available in time for those whose certification expires in 2023. ABEM has emailed detailed requirement options to those affected by the transition.

Taking MyEMSCert Modules

To complete requirements, you will sign into your ABEM Portal. You will not be able to see your new EMS continuing certification requirements in your ABEM portal until late fall 2022.  MyEMSCert modules will be available to take starting in February 2023.
