The Board of Directors of the American Board of Emergency Medicine is pleased to announce that John T. Finnell, M.D., M.Sc., has been appointed to the role of Director of Medical Affairs.
As Director of Medical Affairs, Dr. Finnell will help advance the strategic goals of the Board in its mission to ensure the highest standards of Emergency Medicine. His work will provide leadership, clinical content knowledge, and expertise to relevant ABEM projects and activities including integrating information technology in the development of future assessments.

He is an ABEM-certified physician and has served as a dedicated volunteer for ABEM since 2003, including his recent appointment as a member of the ABEM Board of Directors. His expertise in advancing informatics in Emergency Medicine will contribute to ABEM significantly, and we are excited for him to step into this role,” shared ABEM President Diane L. Gorgas, M.D. 
Dr. Finnell is a Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine and former Chief Medical Information Officer for Emergency Medicine at Eskenazi Health. He helped develop the School of Medicine’s first emergency department tracking system. Dr. Finnell also spearheaded the creation of the School’s first Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education – accredited Clinical Informatics fellowship, for which he served as its fellowship director. His many activities as an ABEM volunteer include being an oral examiner (since 2003) and an exam question writer (since 2016).
ABEM looks forward to having Dr. Finnell’s unique perspectives join our leadership. Dr. Finnell will step down from his role on ABEM’s Board of Directors. He will begin his role as Director of Medical Affairs on February 1, 2025.
