ABEM Statement on the Use of AI to Generate Exam Content

Dear ABEM Volunteers,

Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT, have made headlines in nearly every industry. Discussions about its use will undoubtedly be on future Board agendas.

There is an immediate concern for ABEM: using AI could negate any copyright protections that ABEM has for its exam questions and oral exam cases, which is essential to protecting exam content. Consequently, please be advised that ABEM prohibits the use of AI to generate or modify exam content. Your vast knowledge of the specialty as well as your research and writing skills have served the Board very well thus far, and we’re certain that it will continue to do so. Please also remember that ABEM staff is here to support you in any way we can.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Deepi G. Goyal, M.D., M.H.A.
Chair, Test Development Committee

Suzanne R. White, M.D., M.B.A.
Vice-Chair, Test Development Committee
