Physicians who pass the Qualifying Exam are automatically scheduled to take the Oral Certification Exam in the next calendar year.
In order to take the exam, you must accept your seat assignment by registering and paying the exam fee in your ABEM Portal. Instructions for this process will be sent to you via email.
What do I do if I need special testing accomodations?
By and large, ADA accommodations are not available for the Oral Exam. By Policy, accommodations can not change the construct of the exam or the knowledge, skills, or info intended to be tested. As the Oral Exam, in part, tests a candidate’s ability to function under time constraints, etc., any and all of the common ADA accommodations are not available for the Oral Exam.
Medical courtesy requests may still be applicable and most do not require approval.
If you have questions or concerns about accommodations, contact oralcertification@abem.org.
What if I do not pass the Oral Exam or delay taking it?
In either case, you will delay a step in the certification process and may have other requirements to meet before you can register for the exam. Learn more
Scheduling
You will be notified by ABEM via email when you are assigned to an administration of the virtual Oral Exam. You will receive instructions on how to sign in to your ABEM Portal and accept your seat.
What if I have a scheduling conflict with my appointment?
You may request to switch seats if needed, but it is not a guarantee. Instructions on this process will be included in the email you receive about your seat assignment. Request changes as soon as possible.
