Call for Applications
The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography (AEMUS) Exam Committee seeks one physician member to fill a vacancy on the Committee. ABEM encourages applications from emergency physicians who have achieved the Focused Practice Designation (FPD) in AEMUS. The physician selected for this appointment will begin their term on January 1, 2026. However, the applicant will begin engagement in AEMUS Item Writing processes in 2025. The term is four years in length with the possibility of reappointment to a second and final four-year term. The application period will close on March 10, 2025.
Applicant Criteria
- Be ABEM certified in EM for a minimum of five years before the initial term begins
- Have achieved the AEMUS FPD
- Be actively involved in the clinical practice of AEMUS
- Participate fully in the AEMUS continuing certification process*
- The diplomate with the AEMUS FPD is expected to maintain EM certification. As a result, the following criteria must be met:
- Be certified in EM
- Be actively involved in the clinical practice of EM
- Actively participate in the ABEM EM continuing certification process at the same level as required of all ABEM diplomates

AEMUS Exam Committee Member Roles and Responsibilities:
- Actively participate in a business meeting, one in-person Item Writing meeting, and other virtual meetings as needed
- Item writer for the FPD exam
- Item writer for AEMUS continuing FPD assessment process
- Review and edit items for all assessments
- Contribute material to be used to develop the FPD assessment process (e.g., articles, clinical policy guidelines)
- Update and create the core content of AEMUS that is used as the basis of all assessments
- Update the assessment blueprints
- Oversee standard setting for all assessments
- Actively participate in Examination Committee work as assigned
Time Commitment
Overall time commitment, including meetings and travel, is 85 – 95 hours annually.
The elected Examination Committee member will attend orientation and item writing training and can be integrated into item writing work before the start of their appointment.
