Looking Forward

A Message from the ABEM President: Diane L. Gorgas, M.D.

As the New Year begins, we look forward to a year of growth, change, and exploring new possibilities, serving the underserved, and continuing to support physicians in maintaining the highest standards across their specialties.

We are excited about new leadership updates. The Board of Directors of the American Board of Emergency Medicine announced that John T. Finnell, M.D., M.Sc., FACEP, FACMI, has been appointed to the role of Director of Medical Affairs. We are fortunate to have Dr. Finnell joining our leadership. His advanced expertise in informatics in Emergency Medicine will contribute to furthering our ambitious standards. Welcome Dr. Finnell!

Also, a new leadership position search is currently underway, the Director of Foundation Affairs (DFA). The DFA will provide leadership for the ABEM Foundation and the Dr. Leon L. Haley Jr. Bridge to the Future of Emergency Medicine Academy. The DFA will work with the Board of Directors and staff leadership to set aside direction, goals and initiatives for the foundation’s thought leadership and philanthropic efforts. ABEM is currently open to applications for the DFA.

All Emergency Medicine physicians should have the same opportunity to succeed. ABEM created the Haley Academy to honor the legacy of Leon L. Haley, Jr., M.D. This program is specifically for rising second-year medical students who identify as underrepresented and provides the opportunity to participate in an in-person, all-expenses-paid, two-week mentorship program at the ABEM headquarters in East Lansing, Michigan, in June of each year. This program holds great significance and is deeply meaningful to ABEM.  I encourage you to visit the page and learn more about the program. Please consider sharing the application with early career physicians or someone who may work with this population.

The Health Care Administration, Leadership, and Management (HALM) Certification Exam was administered in November 2024. We celebrate the 59 ABEM certified leaders who passed and received this new certification.

The next exam will be offered in the fall of 2025. Stay tuned for the date!

There is often a burden on emergency physicians to comply with unnecessary requirements. The Coalition of Board-Certified Emergency Physicians (COBCEP) can help! If you are ABEM certified, you may download letters from your ABEM Portal. Some short courses or merit badges are unnecessary, and this will guide you. Take advantage of this valuable resource.

We look forward to collaborating with you and sharing ideas in the New Year!
