The American Public Supports Board Certification and Continuous Learning for Emergency Physicians

ABEM has actively been promoting the value of your certification to patients, health care administrators, and hospital systems. We understand the importance of the high standards for ABEM certification, and others need to be aware of it as well.

In early 2023, ABEM commissioned The Harris Poll* to better understand Americans’ opinions about emergency physician board certification and the frequency of continuing certification activities. The findings indicate strong support for both board certification and frequent, ongoing certification activities.

This is an important finding given that patients entering the emergency department cannot select their emergency physician. Patients need to feel that they can count on high-quality, safe care when they are at their most vulnerable.

This finding is in concert with ABEM’s philosophy about continuing certification. MyEMCert and recent updates to the continuing certification process were designed to provide a way for physicians to keep up with learning and new advances in the specialty. Rather than one high-stakes exam every ten years, MyEMCert modules were conceived as activities that could be taken over the entire course of your certification once per year. Such timing of modules is also in line with the idea of spaced learning.

* Survey Method

This survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of ABEM from January 12-17, 2023 among 2,082 U.S. adults ages 18 and older. The sampling precision of Harris online polls is measured by using a Bayesian credible interval.  For this study, the sample data is accurate to within +/- 2.8 percentage points using a 95% confidence level. For complete survey methodology, including weighting variables and subgroup sample sizes, please contact ABEM at abem@abem.org
