What is a Visiting Scholar?
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Visiting Scholar Program supports the research of early-career physicians and research professionals and facilitates leadership development through engagement with the ABMS and the broader medical community. ABMS Visiting Scholars’ research contributes to the medical literature that supports the development and ongoing assessment of specialists who positively impact the quality, safety, and value of patient care.
The ABMS Visiting Scholars Program is ideal for individuals looking to positively impact their profession as well as specialty certification through research.
ABEM is a 2024-2025 sponsor of the J. David Barry, M.D., Visiting Scholar Fellowship. This is a year-long program, and the fellowship will begin in September 2024.
Applications are being accepted for early-career Emergency Medicine physicians with:
- Experience as a military physician,
- Interest in physician wellness research such as burnout, fitness, and mindfulness,
- Interest in residency education and research,
- Innovations in continuing certification assessment and education, and
- Interest in medical toxicology.

Eligibility
Early-career physicians, junior faculty, fellows, and residents are eligible, as well as individuals holding master or doctorate degrees in public health, health services research, educational evaluation and statistics, public health policy and administration, and Veterans Affairs trainees and researchers. Student visas are not available.
Applying
Proposed research projects can be established projects with a new scope of work or original projects. A research mentor must be identified through the application process. All applicants should consider the impact of their project on reducing health inequities and contributing to the development of a qualified and diversified workforce.
An award of $15,000 is provided to support the direct costs of research and travel expenses associated with program participation.
The ABMS Visting Scholar Experience
- Consult with certification, research, and data science subject matter experts.
- Learn from national thought leaders in medical education, board certification, and health policy.
- Build a professional network of colleagues within and across the certification community.
- Participate in ABMS community meetings, events, and professional health care forums.
- Engage with research mentors and thought leaders across the certification community.
- Scholars remain at their home institutions and work with self-selected mentors.
- At monthly virtual sessions, scholars will present their research project and provide updates to their peers, mentors, subject matter experts, and ABMS Visiting Scholar alumni.
- At the program’s conclusion, scholars present their research findings before a national audience at the ABMS Conference in 2025.
